WE COME TO YOU

Captain Thomas Alexander Peden was a Portrait Painter/Illustrator/Daguerreian Artist who apprenticed under his father Robert and Grandfather Alexander carrying on the family business Alexander Peden Portraits his grandfather started in 1774 which he did for many years then he went to work for Charles Lanneau's "Gallery of Art" on the second floor of McBee's Hall at the corner of Main and McBee Streets in Greenville at its opening in 1855 painting portraits as well. Charles's father Bazile apprenticed under Jeremiah Theus, Charleston's premier portrait painter who also apprenticed T.A.'s grandfather Alexander. T.A.'s son David learned at 16 to be a Daguerreian Artist apprenticing under his father and came to work there officially in early 1859. In December 1859 Lanneau advertised that he was now only doing portraits in oil so Thomas bought into the business taking the Photographic side turning it over to his sons and continued oil portraiture for Lanneau. He also dabbled in Real Estate like his father massing a good bit of property on his own including buying out the original Charles Lanneau's Gallery of Art renaming it Alexander Peden's Gallery of Art and Peden Traveling Photographers Studio #1 in 1860 as a base and creating routes for his sons.
